Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer that primarily affects the lining of the lungs, although it can also occur in the lining of the abdomen or the heart.
It is most commonly caused by exposure to asbestos, which was once widely used in construction, shipbuilding, automotive, and various industries due to its heat resistance and durability. Often we see these claims arising in:
- construction workers around insulation and joint compound
- automotive workers changing brakes and performing body work
- shipyard workers
- veterans on ships
- plumbers/pipefitters working with insulation and equipment
- electricians
- miners
Most commonly these exposures occurred before 1980. Family members of workers exposed to asbestos can also develop mesothelioma due to secondary exposure from asbestos fibers brought home on clothing, shoes, or hair.
If you or someone you know was diagnosed with mesothelioma, consulting a lawyer is important to determine if they are entitled to compensation. There are several legal avenues for pursuing compensation as a result of asbestos-related mesothelioma including a lawsuit and submission to various asbestos settlement trust funds. However, there are time limits to making these claims which vary by state.
